Shoals Music Spotlight – Aaron Bradley

On Saturday night, previous Shoals resident and UNA graduate Aaron Bradley played The Stem & Stein in Madison, Alabama. This man’s amazing guitar skills left me trying to keep up with his fingers. He starting by looping a strong rhythm. Then plucked and strummed melodies and harmonies, blending them together with precision. As the audience began to swoon Aaron took a breath and melted the room. His vocals ranged from smooth to rough, from low to high, from clear to dissonant. It was incredible to see such vast diversity in one artist. His one man show left the audience begging for more and offering future gigs.

My favorite song was his melancholy version of You Are My Sunshine. As he started to play, he set the mood for the audience: “This is not a happy song as you have been led to believe – just listen to the lyrics.” I try to always listen to lyrics and discern their meaning. It surprised me that this escaped my notice for so long. The beauty of art is that it’s based on perception. All views are amazing.

What do these lyrics mean to you?

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

The other night dear, as I lay sleepin’
I dreamed, I held you in my arms
When I awoke dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cry.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

You told me once dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you’ve left me and you love another
And you have shattered all my dreams.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

I’ll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another
But you’ll regret it all some day.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away
Please don’t take my sunshine away.
