Haystax Review at the WC Handy Festival 2015

Sure, everybody’s heard “Kiss” by Prince, “Play That Funky Music,” “Paradise By the Dashboard Lights,” and Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls.” But only the guests at FloBama on Wednesday got to hear those classic hits done bluegrass style, complete with banjo, mandolin, guitars, and fiddle.

Haystax, a ‘fungrass’ band from Enschede, Netherlands, has played these and other classic rock tunes at venues throughout the world. According to the band’s Facebook page, what started out as just a fun get-together with friends in 1999 grew into a demand for more. They have recorded 2 CDs to date.

“This is a hobby for us,” explained fiddle player Jos Pijnappel. “I am a full-time musician, but the others have different jobs.” He went on to explain that the band is on a tour through the US and arranged a stop here for the Handy Festival.

To be sure, Haystax is all about fun. And when you go to see them, be sure to buy them some beers, because their main interest is playing out and enjoying the drinks afterwards.
